In plane view
Island time.
I like the pic of the little puddle jumper taking me away from Friday Harbor, but I much prefer the two that show me coming back (yes, that’s a landing strip and not someone’s driveway). I’m home to stay put for a while and write a whole bunch of music notes! Hooray! And, to spend time outside in this glorious weather. After twenty four years in southern California, living in a place where seasons noticeably delineate one’s outdoor activities is still a real change, even into a third summer living on the island. Today was nearly eighty degrees, and despite my ever-present music delivery deadlines, I couldn’t help but spend a couple of hours working on tidying up the decks and the landscaping. It felt great to do a little huffing and puffing in the sunshine, and I suspect that the notes that emerge tomorrow will reflect all that light, too. Summer, while it lasts, is as precious as any creative inspiration.

You really make Kenmore Air, or what ever tree topper puddle-jumper airlines you use, seem to be a dreamy and sensational way to approach home, glinding over the Salish like a great bird, returning to her nest with a salmon in her beak. It will cool down some as you find time to kayak. The orchas are calling, hear them?
Your musical clip, WATER VOYAGE, with its clarinet duo was some fine mellow jazz with my orange juice this morning. You did manage, after a dry spell, to shake a poem out of the pregnant prose this fine day. Readers of my blog, looking back over the year, get an even more poetic impression of your island soul, your musings, and your music. Welcome home, for now.

Thanks, Glenn, for the welcome. Actually, the piece that’s programmed to play is an old jazz tune of mine with tenor sax called San Nicolas Island, but I got the initial link to the info page wrong and thus, you heard Water Crossing. Both, appropriate underscores to this little stream of consciousness offering!
We are having yet another day of deep heat here on San Juan, and I know it’s probably even hotter on the mainland. I am reminded of how days like these were a dime a dozen in So Cal, and yet here, they are gems to be truly appreciated.

Talk about a small world…here in Buffalo, we bid a fond farewell to our church’s retiring pastor on Sunday. He and his wife, after a long career of service, are leaving Buffalo for…get this…Friday Harbor! I just now remembered that’s your neck of the woods. So if you run into an gregarious and talkative older man with receding hair and very prominent ears named Dennis Conrad, tell him his former parishioners say Hello!
