Cattle Point of view

listen…listen
…about the music
Moo-d music.

There were no cows standing anywhere near me when I snapped this today. I’m sure there’s a reason why this spot on the island is called Cattle Point, but I’m too lazy to do the research and Google it. So if you’re desperately curious or in need of yet one more thing with which to procrastinate from the work you’re actually supposed to be doing instead of perusing blogs like this one, well, have at it.

You can tell, I’m a true professional when it comes to blog procrastination techniques. It’s amazing that I manage to get any composing done at all given my trackball hand’s itchy finger on the clicker. Sometimes there are marvelous rewards for these carefully honed skills, such as when I clicked on a colleague’s fine blog last week and found this. I’m humbled to be in such glorious company, and put there by someone whose opinions I enjoy reading, to boot. Thanks, Steve.

So in my ever-continuing offer of virtual tourism, here, for you, is one of many different vistas from the southern end of San Juan Island. A scattering of rocky atolls you’d want to avoid if you were boating, then Lopez island, and then quite pale in the distance, the mainland’s Olympic Peninsula. Had I turned my camera to the right (well I indeed did but you’ll just have to wait for another time… yes, I’m a bloginatrix), you would be looking at the southern end of Vancouver Island and its town jewel, Victoria. Perhaps there are cows over there, but my zoom lens isn’t that good.ringtones text 10pnokia free 2260 logo ringtone3315 composer ringtone free nokia3410 online free composer ringtone nokianokia voice 6010 ringtonefree ringtone lg vx 6100a miles ringtones thousandallowed girl ringtone Map

“Of Breath and Touch” could refer to the smell and texture of this plant.

Ok, so maybe this artist is in her Kelp Phase. Two in a row, and who knows what’s lurking for my next offering. But the grace and serendipity of this sea vegetable is lovely enough to share, especially with my reader friends who happen to live in kelp-free environments. ringtones free 30 thumbplayil zielinski barrington alana to warrington zactual song ringtones freeaccrington college rossendaleamerican ringtone gladiatorsaerosmith ringtoneringtone adult proof Map

Blog of fog

The clouds have become “Unhinged.”

Like a powerful invader, thick fog pushed hard against our cliffs and blew through the canyon yesterday. Quite oddly, this visitor refused to leave, persisting from morning to sunset. Our ocean fog banks usually burn off in the noontime sun; this day was eerily different. My afternoon beach walk became an exploration through unfamiliar territory, as a pulsing white scrim turned everything I thought I knew about Paradise Cove’s reality into a mystery.

The sea had pulled out. Large oily tufts ripped from the kelp beds were strewn along the tide line, the result of the pounding surf that had lulled me to sleep the night before. The air was simultaneously warm and cool and the beautiful and lurid smell of decomposing plants rose up to meet every misty kiss. The sound of the beach seemed somewhat deadened, and in its place was the heightened visual of a world that after all these years was once again new to me.

Toot, toot, hooray!

The title says it all. And 12 months ago I decided to say this and more to you, whoever “you” happens to be from week to week out there in the e-world.

I’ll be back shortly with further musings on the other side of 2007, but here’s how all it began exactly one year ago.add to lg ax380 ringtonesheatherington alicesouth yerington 509from warrington adopted 1940swarrington adopted from 1920stelus krzr to adding ringtonesbarrington ride allstate motorcyclecatherington lane a photo of Map

Moving experiences

…listen
…info about the music

Something with a sonic vista, from a little film I scored over a decade ago.

My life is a-flutter with about a zillion (round number) preparations that are involved in moving people, cats, and assorted physical stuff a thousand miles north. This exercise is not for the faint of heart. But it’s great fun. Just to keep things interesting, we’re juggling multiple escrows at once: sailboat and slip in Santa Barbara, sailboat up north. Malibu house, island house. Not to mention movers, inspectors, RV and house rentals… I’ve organized countless large-scale events over the years without batting an eye, but I admit that this move is making my brain ache.

So what to do for an aching brain? Well, my answer is to either play music or play in the sand. There’ll be plenty of opportunity this coming year for me to share the beauty of the San Juan Islands on this blog, so I’ll refrain from posting too many recent photos from up there for the time being. Instead, here’s a great place to play in the sand, just north of Malibu’s city limits: the Great Dune. Not too long ago, Charles and I decided to climb the damn thing, and for all our huffing and puffing we were greeted at the top by a gorgeous expanse of ocean and coastline.

Moving, in whatever form, offers great rewards.

Living on the edge

…listen
…info about the music

“Unhinged,” for a scene which is that and more.

It’s impossible for the drama of this scene to translate to you in a 400-pixel wide snapshot. So just imagine: a 90-foot high bluff, chunks of which the size of a drive-thru Dairy Queen recently fell thundering to the sand (was anyone standing there at the time? Ooh, listen carefully for muffled screams…). Those huge, crumpled boulders used to be the polite back yard of the once-comfortable home now perched at the extreme edge, its broken plumbing and irrigation dangling sadly in the breeze for all to see.

The indignity of over-exposure. Something once beautiful now cruelly stripped, bared and vulnerable. Perhaps the house belongs to a celebrity who’s all too used to experiencing such insults. I’ve kept tabs on this particular theater of entropy over many walks, but there was something different today; as with many sudden demolitions, one can’t quite recall what had been there just a week before. And I am again reminded of the impermanence of so much I attempt to grasp. The concept of absolute possession, both beauty and material, is utter illusion.10p text ringtonesnokia 2260 free ringtone logocomposer free 3315 ringtone nokiaringtone online 3410 free nokia composerringtone 6010 voice nokiafree 6100 ringtone vx lgringtones thousand miles aallowed girl ringtone Mapa ha ringtonescountry ringtones 0free motorola ringtones 100ringtone 18 wallpaper2 ringtones step100 mobile virgin ringtone freeringtone down door 3ringtone cent 50 site Mapswinger homemade moviesmovie cake layernude celebs moviesmovie privatemovies online xxxblockbuster rental moviemovies daily sapphicdildo sex movies free Map

Some of “Surge,” from my string quintet “Current Events,” to accompany the event of these currents.

Today was a big sea day. Waves coming in high and barrelling right up to the foot of the bluffs. We walked down with music friends from the east coast at the end of the day (when have I ever written that I was there in the early morning? Do you see a pattern here?!), and stood on what little was left of the beach as cool water enveloped our legs with each incoming set. It was exhilarating. Friday cat mousing

What is it about humans that we insist on putting weird fuzzy objects in front of our cats and expect them to be impressed? I don’t think Smudge believes for one moment that this is a mouse. Just look at that nonplussed face. Could be the faux-leopard print that just put it over the top.

Meanwhile, a foot and a half away here on the studio floor, Moses is having a nice stretch and snooze. And in a few hours when dawn arrives and my work night ends, so will I. I think I’ll use the bed instead.

Soaring

In breaking with my tradition of brand new snapshots, this photo of me waaaaay up in the air above the Santa Barbara Pacific, was taken over a year ago.
In keeping with my tradition of offering joy and beauty on this little bloglet, there’s a reason I’m posting it.

I’m over halfway through the new quartet for flute, violin, cello and piano (still maddeningly untitled), and it’s at the fun, creative puzzle-solving point that composers experience when they’ve written and largely developed the main material for the piece, and now need to find ways for various composed sections to flow organically and inevitably from one to the next.

Great joy, this part of the process is. I love strong form and motivic development; I must have been Beethoven’s chamber maid in a previous life. 🙂

Often with pieces, I go through varying degrees of “gee, this is pretty ok… wow, this is very nice… yikes, this will be awful… ok, it’s not so bad… yes, it truly is a turd, and I will be shown for the fraud that I am… well, all right, it’s actually ok.” And so on. I know for a fact that I am not alone in this schizophrenic neurosis; the internal love/hate tug of war is a common affliction among composers.

But this blossoming piece, for whatever reason, is truly resonating with me. This of course portends absolutely nothing as to its overall worth and whether the musicians and audience will be enjoying as much as I. But it’s soaring, deeply emotional, unashamedly touching music that I am so happy to be immersed in. There’s a flying, elevating, calmly euphoric quality to it that has caused my mind to wander to past similar experiences, and para-gliding over the stunning coastline pictured here was certainly one of them. From hundreds of feet up I could hear the barking of the sea lions as clearly as when I’m on our sailboat, and the sight of their bodies flowing through the ocean was beautiful. The day was cloudless and the views of the mountains stretched beyond my imagination. These photos of me could not possibly capture the complete ecstasy that raced through my heart.

No music clip for posting today, because the notes that are racing through my head right now are even better than anything I could offer. At least, to me.
